Breakaway Investor is also touting this one (SIRF) .. calling it the one stock that will make you a millionaire over the next 5 years.... the chart looks like it could put you in the poorhouse .. but on the other hand, buying down here means very little risk.. it is currently around 21, a close under 20 and one would bail. I have it on my watch list to check daily for any signs of positive ... anything.

Something was nagging at me about this stock and I wanted to get some others input. I went back the other day to listen to the most recent conference call from their web site. I you are so inclined, give a listen. I came away with allot of 'we don't discuss that' and 'we don't give those figures' comments scratching at the back of my noodle.............I was wondering if I was just 'stirring the mental tea leaves' on this one or did it seem a little over the top with lack of disclose? Aware of the fact that their are business items you do not openly speak about, but it seemed rater "reserved" to me. Anyone?

    Regards.

Taipan highly overestimated the barriers to entry in the GSP chip market. Now the stock isn't looking so sweet.

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199903410

Founded in 1999, Global Locate has focused on GPS chip and navigation technology. Currently producing its third generation of GPS chips, the firm has built a global GPS reference network of assistance data for its A-GPS-equipped chips, which can boost performance and reduce the time required to find a location.

Noting that traditional GPS can take several minutes to determine locations, Broadcom said Global Locate's assistance data can reduce the time to seconds.

Well, the Gumshoe is starting to get a big head -- I post a writeup on SIRF yesterday that 90% of my readers get this morning (since the email only goes out once a day), and lo and behold the shares spike up 7% today on no news! Such power over the markets I have!

OK, so that's obviously not true ... but interesting that SIRF is spiking today nonetheless, I wouldn't be surprised if it was some more concerted Taipan touting to their subscribers that's pushing the shares up today.

For those of you who believe, as all right-thinking people should (insert smiley face here), that the Gumshoe is moving markets, might be time to sign up for the RSS feed instead of just the email subscription so you can get this market moving information a little earlier!

Or better yet, maybe it's time for me to figure out how to get a feed set up for these forums so you can subscribe to that without having to remember to come back here and check.

Thanks, folks for all the contributions on SIRF -- good to hear the input pro and con, and it's lovely to have something sleuthed out before I even get to looking for it.

Following up the various Agora net promotion of Ceramic Fuel Cells (CFU - Aussie firm) - does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is being touted as the BIG home power unit, about to take off in Europe ...

This has been touted by other services, too -- an Aussie reader sent it in as a solution to a different ad teaser back in April, FYI:

    http://www.stockgumshoe.com/2007/04/holy-grail-of-alternative-energy.html

I didn't know much about it then, nor more now, but it's definitely getting some attention. As another connection between all these stocks, Ambrian was their broker when they opened an AIM listing in London. (http://www.ambrian.com/Our_Operations/Ambrian_Partners/Ambrian_Partners_Case_Studies/Ceramic_Fuel_Cells_Limited/News.aspx?id=166)

Love the technology, love that they're pushing it for residential, and I expect it may well be big someday ... but I think there's maybe still a ways to go before folks are willing to spend a lot of money to have an extremely hot fuel cell in their homes that hasn't yet been tested by time. I could be wrong about that, perhaps the efficiency and novelty will win folks over more quickly. I'd also want to know more about how, with natural gas brinksmanship from Russia and the possibility for increasing nat gas pricing over time, they hope to save money by doing what is essentially more electricity generation from natural gas, albeit distributed. Being natural gas-reliant in Western Europe seems somewhat perilous at the moment.

On the plus side, it won't take all that much adoption to make this wee guy make some money ... and it's down 15% or so since it was first outed on the Gumshoe, so perhaps it's a better buy now.

    Bump.

Looks like SIRF dropped 15% today after releasing earnings. Could be a buying opportunity for those who like it?

My condolences to those who bought in...

Positively brutal for Sirf -- I love the technology, and it seems like their chips ought to be in demand. If this weakness is just from a soft handset market, maybe this is a buying opportunity because that upgrade cycle will turn around eventually. If it's because the GPS chip or the gps phone technology is commoditized and no one particulary needs to have Sirf's version, that's definitely a different story. I don't know on this one, but I do get tempted when I see the prices plummet like this for a company with a good story, if not yet good financials. Not exactly the next Qualcomm so far, eh?

I've noticed that often a stock gets pounded down before a run probably so all the mm's friends can get in on it :-)
SIRF also bottomed last August and by December had risen over 30%. I may nibble on some down here (today it is heading back up .. so may watch to see what happens over the next few days, if this strength continues.

Perhaps Trimble Navigation Ltd. (TRMB) is a safer pick.
