Hi folks -- here's how to participate in the forum, for those not yet involved. It's easy and free:

    1. Join -- this is automatic and easy, and you don't have to provide an email or your real name.
    2. Read some of the discussions.
    3. Have something to talk about? Try using the "search" tab to see if anyone has commented about it before. Use that existing thread if it's relevant, to keep our discussions as organized as possible.
    4. Have something new to talk about? Open a new discussion, and give it a descriptive topic name. For stocks, use company name and/or ticker as the topic, for newsletters, use newsletter name, for teasers use the key point of the teaser as best you can, and in general just use good descriptive names. These threads may be around for months, with more and more additions, so keeping a descriptive name will really help.
    5. When starting a new discussion, make sure to choose an appropriate category from the drop-down box (sleuth challenges and solutions; options; mining and resource stocks; newsletter reviews, "I think you should buy ...", political rants and chatter, and general are the current categories).
    6. NEVER USE THE WHISPER BOX unless you want to have a private conversation. If you enter a name in "whisper", only that person and the administrator (me) will see it.
    7. And follow the rules -- which in a nutshell are: Respect U.S. copyright rules and quote or link to outside sources (don't copy them wholesale), and be nice and don't flame or use personal attacks.
    8. As administrator, I will occasionally move something to a better category or otherwise clean things up, and I reserve the right to ban people who abuse the boards. I don't expect to have to do that, this is a great community of wise and mature people ... thankfully.

So ... thanks to all the participants for making this a useful, vibrant and educational forum for me and, I hope, many other investors. I've seen some great sleuthing challenges solved here that I hadn't gotten to at stockgumshoe.com (or wasn't smart enough to figure out), and I've seen plenty of other great investing ideas, comments about investment newsletters, and general good humor and fellowship. Keep it up, and help spread the word to like-minded investors around the world ... the more, the merrier!

tobin smith 10 bagger The light bulb, as we know it today, is DEAD.

In an age of soaring energy costs and environmental fervor, incandescent bulbs are headed for the trash heap of history. Way too much of the electricity they consume goes up in wasted heat. And according to the Department of Energy, incandescent lighting consumes 22% of all the electricityproduced in the U.S.

But widespread adoption of white-light LEDs – light-emitting diodes – the “new light bulbs” – would cut that energy consumption in half!

    It’s a no-brainer. And this little microcap is a pure-play.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see one of lighting’s big guys buy it out in the next year or so. Color Kinetics doubled on the path to the Philips buyout. A tiny company like this would be much more explosive — we could easily see a buyout five times higher from its current price of around 50 cents per share.

And if they can stay independent longer? This stock could be your next ten-bagger in 2-3 years!

    Banned in Boston?

Not yet. But by law, incandescent bulbs are banned as of 2009 in Europe. Banned in Australia by 2010. Banned in Canada as of 2012.

Even the notoriously-behind-the-times U.S. Senate is working on a proposal to phase out incandescents over 10 years.

But the states, as usual, aren’t waiting for the Feds to lead the way on this do-or-die issue. California, in particular, has already banned the sale of incandescents by 2012. And that is creating a remarkable wealth-building opportun

I'm new to this web site; actually, I found it accidently. But anyway. I saw a teaser about a company in US with very significant nat gas reserver. Apparently the company has "rights" which include timber (no particularly big deal), but they also have subterrarian leases as well. They have a lot of mature timber, but also sit over what appears to be a large reservoir of natural gas. I believe the company may be Deltic Timber (DEL).

I found this website by doing a search for "Tom Dyson 12% letter" and then going through a couple more googlizations to reach the gumshoe. I like the concept, and subscribed immediately. I did not subscribe to the "letter", yet...

    ;-)

    Thanks, Gumshoe!

I found api as the stock but the price is $2.05 so not sure I'm right. Any comments?

I’m absolutely convinced that this tiny stock can rise from $2.65 and hit $60.15 at a minimum. Whispers are that
it could reach $75, but I can’t confirm that yet.

    The Internet

Agora has a financial stake in Everbank. Everbank issues CD's that are FDIC insured to $100K. The interest is calculated on everything from Gold to Yen. You can't lose principal. However, if the index is lower than when you started, you earn nothing. You are locked into the CD for 7 years. A lot can happen to gold in 7 years including going down. May as well buy options on the investment instead of owning a CD. That is what the bank does. As with anything, read the fine print. You are limited to a certain interest amount when you do the CD.
  3.  Report Post# 19
Well put, farley -- this one comes up every couple months when a new tranche of the CD is offered. The fine print is a killer, and the key part of the fine print -- aside from the fact that your principal is only guaranteed if you hold it until maturity -- is that you get a return based on the difference between the price of gold in six months, and the average gold price during the next seven years as measured in a very specific way, essentially, not on the actual change from today to seven years from now.

I don't knwo if Agora has a stake in Everbank, but they do get a commission on every person they send to Everbank who buys one of these products. They do disclose this, though they say it doesn't impact their opinion. Hmm.

Here's what I wrote about this offer most recently, and I would echo farley's recommendation to read the fine print and really understand how they will calculate your return in seven years.

I know that I will be able to get another job, but I also know that my salary will be no where near what it is now. So I will need to supplement my income. That's where the 10,000.00 and some really great income producing investments come in to play. Here is one that came today from Investment U and apparently has to do with "The Oxford Club" membership. My curiosity is what they are talking about with regards to the "gas rebates". I can't find it mentioned on the website nor this forum but feel I musst have just missed it. Thanks for saving me alot with your service.

OPEC Meets Tomorrow. Here's What To Do...

    Dear Investment U Reader,

We wanted to get this report in your hands as quickly as possible.

As I write, members of the OPEC cartel are flying on their private jets to Vienna, Austria for an emergency meeting.

The crisis? Falling oil prices are cutting into their huge profit margins. And tomorrow, OPEC plans to "firm up" prices by cutting back production by 1 million barrels a day. As if that isn't enough, OPEC already scheduled another meeting in December to reduce oil production even more.

Bottom line: Our only source of relief these last couple of months - the recent gasoline price "holiday" - could soon be history... starting as soon as tomorrow.

But for a few smart Americans, this price hike won't matter in the least. They're making enough money to offset their current gas costs, plus recoup the thousands they've already wasted after years of inflated prices.

And you can easily do it, too.

Simply click here to find out how to get your first "gas rebate" check on November 14.

    Best regards,"

2009 wish list for the Gumshoe:

Have your IT people figure out a way to undo/disable the time-out feature in the forum. It's irrelevant, after all.

I'm weary of re-signing in every 10-15 minutes and sometimes getting shut out while in the middle of formulating a brilliantly drafted proposed post that gets lost because I've been timed-out when I try to submit it.

I like to homestead, so please help me out.

    Happy New Year.

Hi spreadtrader (and everyone else) -- sorry that I missed your "wish list", I get lazy about monitoring the forums because so many excellent contributors do a good job of keeping it nice and smooth, so I apologize that I didn't even see this before today. I have no idea how to change the "time out" period, I never get logged out when I'm in and I do let it "remember me" with cookies, but I'll look into it and see if I can figure it out.

It's got to be more fun than working on my taxes, at least.

I have noticed that when I have been timed out (only when I am writing a post) and get a problem with your post message, I found that just hitting the add your comments button again seems to work OK for me.

When I am just logged in I have not had any problem with being logged out so far either.

ST - if being logged out when your not writing a post is the problem you might just need to change some of your settings.

If I am not mistaken, I think ASAFP is quite computer systems knowledgable and he might be able to offer a quick and easy solution for you.

When I receive a whisper comment the box is shaded pink, but if I make a whisper comment and later see it on the thread it is not pink shaded. Does that mean my reply whisper wasn't "whispered"?

Also, how does the "sink this discussion" thing work and who does it effect?
Same for using "bookmark this discussion".
    Any guidance on those features?
  11.  Report Post# 42
Your whispers are shaded yellow. Whispers to you are shaded pink. Everything else is white.

There's a 'Sink this discussion' option at the top left (under Options). You can sink any discussion that does not have a 'Sink' label in front of the subject. You can unsink any discussion that has a 'Sink' label in front of the subject.

SINK stops the discussion from rising to the top for the general population. (That's why it's called 'Sink'.)

You can post to a discussion that's been sunk, but the discussion only rises to the top for the person who updated it last or the person who's whispered to by the last poster. (I think...)

I'm not sure of the mechanics so please correct any of my misconceptions.
