Hi folks. I'm going to probably be unable to post anything either here or over at the Gumshoe next week (though I might), so I'm going to run a contest for the week to give y'all some extra motivation to keep the good ideas flowing in my absence.
Starting Saturday and going for a week, there will be a very simple contest, with two prizes:
Best post: $50 And Best contributor: $50
That first one will be for the best single post that anyone puts up during the week -- it can be your opinion about anything investment related, or a sleuthing job, or analysis of a company, whatever you want, and it can be a fresh discussion starter or a thoughtful response to something that's already on the boards.
I will take account of the features in the forum that let people show their appreciation for a post (there's a new "Thanks" feature that adds your username to a list of people who appreciate a particular posting, and there's a voting feature that posters can turn on or off for each post to let folks vote on them), so the community feedback will help me decide -- but I get to be in charge, so I'll make the final decision (partly because I'm not yet convinced that those voting features work properly).
The second prize will be for the person who most consistently contributes good stuff to the boards -- maybe not a single prize-winning post, but a bunch of good ones that help people or bring in new information.
There are a few dozen folks who consistently post to the forums (and I've learned some great stuff from many of them) but there are hundreds more who lurk and read -- the prize winner can be anyone, doesn't have to be someone who has posted in the past, so now's the perfect time for you new folks to get involved and contribute.
Best of luck, everyone -- if the prize had been given out this week there would have been some good winners, so I'm looking forward to seeing what y'all come up with while I'm gone.
I'm new to the board, but have been reading your great sleuthe postings for some time now. Lets talk about the clean tech revolution and the arena within that revolution that has garnered very little press. Its soil and groundwater remediation. Remediation, for those of you who aren't familiar with the terminology, is basically curing something of what ails it. Roughly 200 years of industrialization has left of a legacy of unchecked contamination for the first 150 years of the 200 years. This pollution has caused massive contamination of the groundwater and soil aka brownfields. Many companies engage in remeditation work, but the only proven system is the dig and haul approach. There is a new company out there by the name of VeruTEK who is revolutionizing the way the industry is approaching the problem. Consider this a stock tip, as I see massive upside potential, and very little downside. Do you research. www.verutek.com On the website you can learn all about their product, see press releases, and get links to recent articles written about them in highly respected publications. Any thoughts on this? Thoughts on the clean tech revolution?
Stock Gumshoe, My general comments are my belief that an investor or speculator should not rely upon those newsletters. Whether you are in the Graham/Dodd/Fisher/Buffet school of value investing or speculator like Jesse Livermore, their advice eschews these newsletter tipsters but to do your own research. Its all there in their books and biographies as to their methodologies which are as sound today as in the past. When you work in developing your own knowledge and skills in investing or speculating, you gain knowledge and skills the general public totally lacks PLUS develop control over emotions (you are your worst enemy) such as greed and fear. Also, you notice that you are more confident and sleep better, not to mention that your results improve also. Learn from the masters. Read constantly. And if you still have some extra free time, go scan a newsletter tipster. See you folks at Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. reading the latest financial/business literature.
http://www.angelnexus.com/o/web/2053 They give 3 teasers on the TSX exchange. A bunch of heads looking for these 3 companies are better than one. Cut and paste website to read about these companies. Hopefully, one of you will recognize the companies based on the info Jame West supplies
Micaiah - RELY ON TOUTS? OF COURSE NOT. If they were that great, they wouldn't be wasting their time working as salesman. nevertheless, as in anything else - some are better than others - and if they havbe some institutional subscribers - they usually have a contract that compels them to wait a few days before they can post their picks to us little guys - nevertheless, with a large enough following - they can almost always cause a pop. Consider Hsu's prediction for a pop today (7-25) on EDU on earnings - earnings were ok - but the buying happened monday - its an old saw - "buy the rumor, sell the news" - old, but no less true then ever before In fact - I always have to laugh when they say "limited subscriptions left - will close to new subscribers" or some similiar manure - I don't want to be on an exclusive list - I want everybody to buy what I'm buying - but do the math - ever see this - "WE ARE ONLY ACCEPTING 100 SUBSCRIBERS" - great, they send out - say just one pick a week - OK - benifit of the doubt - 90 subscribers purchase $5000. worth of stock - 9X5 = 45 + 4zeros==$450,000. OK, now say its a $25 stcok -thats 18,000 shares - hardly enough to move a mrkt - besides, why would they limit the number of scripts they sell? After expenses are met, every new subscription goes straight to the "net" column. - SO, THE REASON I ( and I imagine others like to decipher the teasers, is because the process itself becomes the due diligence one should use before trading any stock. Good luck - don't take anyone's "word for it" - hear everyone, but listen only to your own best judgment.
Hi folks -- contest winners tom76, The Fox, and Hexdek16 were just announced on the blog. Congratulations for everyone for all the great contributions of the past week, it was a pleasure to read them all and a difficult task to discern what looked to me to be the finest posting. Sorry to those who didn't win this time ... but I'll try to do it again before too long.
