On a hopeful note I think the political lurch to the right in Europe yesterday may be an indication of possible Republican gains in 2010 in spite of themselves. If you do your research going back at least 25 years, I think you'll find election trends in this country tend to follow those in Europe. Obvious examples are Reagan's election following Margaret Thatcher's success and the Democrat's wins following a move to the left in Europe after the terrorist train bombing in Spain. The trends go deeper and are more complex but I think you get the idea.
